Updated October 23, 2026: Mera Kharcha has changed since this was written. Payment SMS tracking now works through the separate Mera SMS app, and voice entry, AI and some sharing features need Premium. See how the app works today.
If you've searched for an expense tracker app in India, you already know the problem: most of them ask you to manually log every transaction. Every. Single. One. Nobody does that for more than a week.
What Indians actually need is an app that keeps every payment in one place (PhonePe, Google Pay, SBI, HDFC, credit cards, cash) without asking for a bank login or OTPs. That's what Mera Kharcha is built for.
What Makes a Good Expense Tracker for India?
India's payment landscape is unique. On any given day, a person might pay rent via NEFT, buy groceries with PhonePe, use a credit card for online shopping, and transfer money to a friend via UPI. No single bank app covers all of this — and manually tracking across five different apps is a non-starter.
A good expense tracker for India needs to:
- Work across all banks and UPI apps automatically
- Require zero manual entry
- Keep data private — on your device, not their servers
- Not need your net banking credentials or OTP
- Be genuinely free, not free for 7 days
Most apps fail on at least three of these. Mera Kharcha clears all five.
How Mera Kharcha Tracks Expenses Automatically
Every time you make a payment — UPI, card swipe, NEFT, EMI auto-debit, wallet top-up — your bank sends you a transaction SMS. That message already contains everything: the amount, merchant, date, and account.
With the companion Mera SMS app as your default SMS app and Auto-track payments turned on, eligible payment alerts are sent to Mera Kharcha's server with your consent and become expenses you can review. There's no bank login and no linking of accounts. Prefer not to use SMS? Add payments yourself in a few seconds.
It works across every major bank — SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, Kotak, PNB, Canara, BOB — and every UPI app — PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM, Amazon Pay, and more.
Key Features That Set It Apart
Zero Manual Entry
Most expense trackers are only as good as your habit of logging transactions. Mera Kharcha removes the habit requirement entirely. You go about your day, spend money normally, and your expense report updates itself.
Works Without Bank Login
You never hand over your net banking credentials, OTP or account number. Payments come from what you enter, or from the payment messages your bank already sends when you turn on auto-tracking in Mera SMS. Your banking passwords stay with you.
100% Private — Data Stays on Your Device
Your expense records are stored on Mera Kharcha's servers so you can sign in on another phone. With auto-tracking on, eligible payment messages are sent over HTTPS for processing, only after you agree. You can review imported payments, pause syncing or delete your account anytime. The privacy policy explains exactly what is stored.
EMI and Bill Reminders
For loan EMIs, SIPs, insurance premiums and utility bills, set a reminder once and choose how often it repeats. Mera Kharcha alerts you before the due date. Bill reminders need Premium.
Split Expenses
Going on a trip or splitting a group dinner? Set a split window and every payment in that period is automatically added. Everyone can see who paid what, without anyone having to remember or chase.
Family Mode
Link family members' accounts securely and get a combined view of household spending, SIPs, and loans — all in one dashboard, without sharing passwords.
Available in 20+ Languages
Mera Kharcha is available in Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, and more — making it accessible across India, not just for English speakers.
Is Mera Kharcha Really Free?
Everyday tracking is free with ads: adding expenses and income, charts, search and optional SMS imports through Mera SMS. Voice entry, bill reminders, AI questions and some sharing features need Premium, and every new account gets a 7-day Premium trial.
Who Is It For?
Mera Kharcha is built for anyone with an Android phone who wants to understand where their money goes. It's particularly useful for salaried people who use several payment methods, freelancers managing irregular income, and families who want a shared view of household spending.
If you've tried expense tracker apps before and given up because logging everything was too much work — this is the app that removes that barrier entirely.

Does it work with my bank?
Most Indian banks send transaction SMS alerts, and SMS auto-tracking works with many of them, including the large banks. Supported senders and message formats vary, so not every payment is detected; you can always add a missing one yourself.
What about UPI apps?
All major UPI apps are supported — PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM, Amazon Pay, Cred, and more. Any UPI transaction that sends an SMS will be tracked.
Is my data safe?
All SMS reading and processing happens on your device. Nothing is uploaded. Your transaction data never leaves your phone unless you choose to enable Google account sync, in which case it's linked to your account only.
Does it need my net banking password?
Never. Mera Kharcha doesn't ask for your bank login, OTP or account linking. SMS auto-tracking goes through Mera SMS, with your consent.
